When Silence Speaks: A Moment of Gratitude

Today, I want to pause and hold this moment with gratitude.

When Silence Speaks: The Hearing Together Series, Volume 1, written together with Dr. Sheri Vie, is now live on Amazon. What began as conversations, reflections, and shared experiences has grown into a book created with care, trust, and purpose.

This book exists because parents and grandparents chose to share their journeys honestly. Their stories carry love, strength, patience, and hope and my deepest thanks goes to every family who trusted us with something so personal.

I am sincerely grateful to Dr. Sheri Vie for her vision, guidance, and belief in this project, and for welcoming me into this collaboration. Working alongside her on a book meant to support families navigating hearing loss has been an honour I value deeply.

My thanks also to Muhammad Izaan for the cover image, which reflects this journey with quiet strength and warmth.

When Silence Speaks is written for families, and also for those who walk alongside them, the people who support, guide, and care, so understanding can grow and reassurance can reach further.

I’m also thankful to the Cochlear Implant Wellness Collective community, whose values of care, inclusion, and lived experience are woven into this work.

My hope is simple: that this book reaches families and those who support them at moments when encouragement and understanding matter most.

 I Act Like I Hear You: The Hidden Toll of Trying Sometimes, I nod when I didn’t really understand. I laugh when others laugh, even if I didn’t catch the joke. I rehearse responses in my head because I’m not sure if I really heard you right. I act like I’m hearing more than I am. This isn’t lying. It’s survival .  When Listening Drains Me: The Side of Deafness No One Sees People often assume listening is easy. That if you have ears or even a cochlear implant you can just hear, respond, and move on. But for me, listening is work. It takes energy, focus, and emotional strength especially in noisy or social situations. In group conversations , it’s the hardest. If I miss a word, I turn to someone next to me for help. But even that feels risky. They may think I’m disturbing them, interrupting, or not paying attention. But the truth is I’m trying harder than anyone realizes. And when I can’t keep up, it hits me like a storm. A flood of frustration, helplessness, sadness… sometimes all at once.
