When Silence Speaks: The Moment Everything Changed

When Silence Speaks: The Moment Everything Changed

There are moments in life when one sentence quietly divides everything into before and after.

While working on When Silence Speaks: The Hearing Together Series, Volume 1, I listened to parents talk about the moment they first heard their child’s diagnosis. Again and again, they described the same instant: sitting in a hospital room, holding their child close, trying to understand words that felt too heavy to process all at once.

Chapter 1 of the book focuses on that moment.
Not the medical details alone, but the human experience of hearing unexpected news.

Parents spoke about the shock, the feeling that time slowed down. About the questions that came rushing in all at once, often without clear answers. And about the quiet strength they did not realize they possessed until that very moment.

For many, the first 24 hours after diagnosis were filled with uncertainty. Some parents described feeling lost, others overwhelmed, and some simply numb. Yet woven through all these stories was something powerful: love that did not change, and a deep instinct to protect, learn, and move forward, even when the path ahead was unclear.

Working on this project has reminded me that families navigating hearing loss are not just dealing with a medical condition. They are navigating emotions, expectations, fears, and hopes, often all at the same time. What they need most in that moment is not perfection or certainty, but understanding, support, and the reassurance that they are not alone.

When Silence Speaks was created to hold space for these stories. To say to parents that your feelings are valid, your questions are natural, and your journey, though unexpected, is one shared by many others who have walked this path before you.

If you have ever received unexpected news that changed the direction of your life, whether as a parent, a caregiver, or an individual, I invite you to pause and reflect. What helped you get through that moment? Who stood beside you when things felt uncertain?

These are the conversations that matter.
And these are the stories we hope will continue to connect, support, and empower families everywhere.
